Experiment 4(My main work)

This would also be my a part of my study plan's content.

The toilet sign is a classic simple design which is legible and no requiring languages.Nowadays, it is becoming more funny around world. Cool toilet sign can be seen everywhere. People try to add emotions making it not that cold, for example, the man and woman figures in super hero garment, in swimsuit, or in Indian traditional costume. Except that there is also a brilliant transsexual sign happened in a Thai school. Are there any more possibilities in those two sign? With this question, visual experiments are started.

The first experiment was trying to blur differences between man figure and woman figure. The designer try to use woman figure to show man characters, like man with superhero cape, man wearing kilt. The second one was put the transsxual sign on different scenes and try to find more meanings, because when it's in Thai school it is a quite functional sign for transsxual students, however, if it's appearing in a European country or a restaurant with only one toilet, it could totally mean different. Unfortunately, this one was stucked either, so the dsigner had to rethink and start another one.

The third experiment the designer did is about a chinese character "福"(FU) which means blessing, happiness. The first step of the experiment is interviewing chinese people how they understand what is "FU" by using the toilet signs as well as transsexual sign. The insight came from a photograph in Haoran Bi's third experiment that was trying to put transsexual sign on different scenes. The photograph is a chinese ancient structure which is with that character "FU" on the wall. An character or a word can be translated in languages but also signs, symbols, images, illustrations and so on. It would have enormous possibilities depending on different people with distinct experiences, gender, education and culture backgrounds.

After sending the question sheet, over sixty images were collected so far. Data was categoried by age and number of the bacis man and woman signs on their drawings. Firstly, most of them considered "FU" as family, couple. A lot of them believe that raising their children, supporting for the elders is "FU" which is absolutely chinese traditionnal culture. Interestingly, there is one excpetion, a young boy, an undergraduate studying in engineering in Tsinghua University, drawed just himself facing sea and mountains. Secondly, from their explantions, their age, experience, in or out of a relationship, marry or not, having a child or not can be totally seen. More importantly, there are quite a lots of participants offering excellent ideas that they were using incredible metaphors to interpret relation between man and woman. Also, many kis aroud ten years old gave creative imaginations. And unexpectedly, the imagination of people who is over 40s is more over young people who is in 20s. Among 20s, participants who work as designer are less creative than participants do not.

The most important part is to think about how to present experiment's results. First of all, to pick up images with common traits that the designer is also interested in. Participants' explanations of relation between a couple could be a topic for a master project. As mentioned, participants used lots of amazing metaphors to express what kind of relationship making them feel comfortable and happiness, for instance, there is a business man drawing two figures connected by a spring piece ------- relationship should be flexible. How clever! Therefore, the designer decided to use this as topic to extend the master project. It prefers to showing or quesioning compare to telling. In some man domain societies, woman need to fight for their rights, but it's not unlimited. As we know, in some countries prevailing feminism, it seems to be unrational sometiems. Also, man should try to accept that it's nothing that woman can hold a responsibility or a job or a position what usually man used to do. The whole project the designer intend to express is to show different views of relationship of man and woman. It's not about gender bias or feminist, in other way, it's showing there should be many differently parallel concepts around world, because that's why world is so colorful. World and society are keep changing and never stop, who knows what the world could be.

The presenting way is initially managed as an collection of crafts which requires materials(papers, wood, metal , cloth or plastic) and making ways'(handmade, laser cutting or else) testing which might need relevant workshops' help. And, it would be better to take photos of them in a studio with well equipments. The final exhibition need several glass showcases to show crafts, walls pasting posters and a book to show the whole process of work. Besides, it's important to make better redesigns of their original ideas. Trying to do more visual experiments to make sure what is a better to communicate including appropriate color, size, materials and so on.
